[ it's not odd for witches to live in this part of the country. it's one with woodland bordering a lake and an open plain, plenty of magical ley lines for witches to tap on and plants for the brewing of their work. and before one gets the idea of evil women cackling in huts - witches weren't bad, the pre-requisite to being one was to care for the land that they watched over.

some witches live in villages, while others live out in the wild. like this particular witch, who dresses more like a hunter, hunting those who would cut down trees without the permission of the dryads or overfish. they're wardens of nature, in this sort of place... and that includes the creatures who live in it.

she's not usually one to adopt creatures, no - just nurse them back to health and let them be on their way. but this particular creature - no, person is quite exceptional. it had human form, possibly a spirit, yet it had been found lying in a pool of viscous black blood.

good thing that she found it instead of any other witch, then. she's naturally resistant to things like these, so she had taken the spirit home and cleaned its form of all that dried blood. it looks quite cut up too, which leads to questions about who or what hurt it... but that can wait, after it has mended.

so she's in her house now, the spirit sleeping in her bed, wrapped up by soft sheets while she does her daily cleaning routine. someone should be coming to visit soon... ]

[Lapis was one of the witches who lived out in the wilds, secluded from the others - tending to the plant-life that surrounded her home and the lands she cared for, as well as keeping an eye on the creatures there. Luckily her skill with plants allows her to create concoctions to help tend to them, if they're ever ill or hurt - along with also creating deterrents, or worse, for those who dared to hurt the creatures.

And while usually a secluded person, Lapis soon found herself taking in a... well, she still isn't sure herself. Neither a person nor a spirit, at least one she's familiar with - far different from the small sprites that fluttered around her gardens, or the spirits that dwell within the earth. Either way, she found herself grateful for his company - her time in the woods far lonelier than she had wanted to admit.

Though, another part of her role is extending aid to her fellow witches if they need it - especially in a case like this. Having asked her companion to tend to a few things in her absence, checking on hybrids and analysing growths, before she heads out - making sure to pack everything she would need, her steps quick as she heads towards another part of the wood.

And so as Crim goes through her routine, there will be a few quick knocks on the door - golden eyes peering up at the other woman once the door is answered. Lapis then raising her hand in greeting, expression settled into something still and calm.]

Good afternoon, Crim, I'm Lapis. You had called for me...?
hollowbutnotempty: Doll, shiftily looking off to the side, with a similar emoticon up in the corner (¬w¬)

Doll nodded; there wasn't any reason not to, if they did. They paused just after they did, frowning slightly in thinking over something, but then shook their head to themselves and looked up again, to Eve. The act of bringing their sleeve up to their face again to wipe off the last of the seemingly imaginary tears' traces didn't seem to be a very conscious one for the odd child, but they did it and then held the little device back to them to type something else. Crim could probably read it easily enough despite not being explicitly shown the screen:

android? or cosplay? or what?

They turned their little device so Eve could more easily read it, watching for their reaction.
cmbr: (photon)

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-05-28 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Crim has her back turned for now, checking out her work, so she doesn't read the message immediately. Eve regards the small device with interest, aware that it's being addressed - but it doesn't talk either, merely tilting its head at the statement. It then moves to Crim's side and motions to the device, indicating that there's a question that only she can answer.

"Oh, he's a homunculus. Kind of like an android, but made with alchemy. No robotic parts."

Did that make sense?
cmbr: (gluon)

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-05-28 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[ they have had dealings before, a witch of alchemy trading with a witch of the spirits for supplies that only the other could make. in this way they have a healthy respect for each other, knowing their own limitations and the knowledge that only other witches possess.

she's dressed in simple hunting clothes, as if she expects herself to bolt out of the house in a moment's notice. but there's nothing tense about her countenance, at least not yet. ]

I did. Thanks for coming, I made tea, it's on the table if you're thirsty.

[ she closes the door behind her fellow witch, the latch falling in place naturally as a gust of wind. precautions, really. ]

I found a spirit a few hours ago, it seems badly hurt. I don't think I can treat it well so I was wondering if you could take a look.
hollowbutnotempty: Doll, smiling, with a little pink heart (Curiouser and Curiouser~)

[personal profile] hollowbutnotempty 2018-05-29 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Doll blinked at that, and looked between the two, eyes slightly wider.

A homunculus?

But--

No. No no no no. Just because this was a different world than Doll's didn't mean that it was that world. That world was a work of fiction. And even if its author had figured correctly about how things worked, didn't mean that they'd have gotten all the details. Surely Amestris was fiction. Surely the events had been fiction too. And even if they weren't, this was an island; Doll had seen the map, and it wasn't the same place. Even if multiverse theory were being proven correct right then and there... it was a one-in-infinity chance, was what that meant, right?

Eve and Crim seemed friendly enough, besides. So it was best, Doll decided, to try shelving such assumptions, and to try figuring things out on their own instead.

They frowned a little again, thinking on it, and typed.

so artificial/engineered organics? cloning + magic = Eve?

[The respect Lapis had for the other witch had always been great - especially since she had been a help in attaining supplies that could be acquired nowhere else. It's why she's more than happy to aid her in this - though there is some curiosity too.

And while Crim is dressed as a hunter, Lapis's attire seems more in-line with a typical witch - flowing skirts and a long shawl, all in pale and earthy colours. One hand smooths against the fabric of her skirt as she steps in, nodding in thanks while the other hand keeps a firm hold on her bag strap.

Though while she can't resist the call of tea, golden eyes are still focused on Crim as she speaks - humming softly as she takes a sip from her cup. Then she places it back down, adjusting her bag on her shoulder once more - with how much she brought, it's a heavy weight. But better to bring too much than too little.]

Can you show them to me? I've brought most of my medical supplies, so I should be able to do something.

[ she's already halfway to her bedroom door when lapis speaks: ]

Yeah, of course. This way.

[ crim's house is very much an example of organized chaos - there are papers spread around tables and jars unlabeled with anything specific, but it seems like she doesn't need one; that she knows where everything is. the door opens up to crim's bedroom, with a small desk accompany a large bed. the bed is between a queen-size and a single person size, which might speak some about crim's own sleeping habits.

BUT ANYWAY. the spirit is tucked up in her bed presently - one that looks surprisingly human, with a full spread of grey hair. there are what seems to be thick scars on the lower half of its face. its arms are bandaged rather neatly (crim's work, no doubt) and pulling aside the blanket would reveal that most of its body is covered with wounds. ]

I'm glad it's still alive....

For the most part, the two adults (?) are patient while Doll susses out his thought process - though when the device is presented, it gets Crim to tilt her head a little.

"Something like that. It's really complicated, though. Eve is the first one ever made."

She turns to pet the homunculus on its head, and it smiles - just a little, though it's more out of a lack of expression than a lack of emotion within. Though once she returns her hand to her side, she turns to address Doll again:

"He's a little frail health-wise, so try not to bump him or anything."
hollowbutnotempty: Doll, smiling, with a little pink heart (Curiouser and Curiouser~)

actual child, tbh

[personal profile] hollowbutnotempty 2018-05-30 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
Doll nodded, smiling a little more back, and eyed Eve again.

No red circuitry-looking lines, no suspicious tattoos, at least that they could see....

No, if anything, Eve's rather mild demeanor, plus Crim's warning about him being physically fragile, just reminded Doll of the pretty things adults usually kept up high on their shelves, or inside glass cabinets for display. The toys that weren't meant to be played with.

Except maybe gently... Eve couldn't really be content to do nothing all the time, right? And when Doll's human, Tanya, didn't feel up to doing much -- when she was ill, usually -- there were still things she could do.

Doll held their device up again after a moment, where they hoped both Crim and Eve could read it easily enough:

quiet things?

reading, art, writing, watching cartoons, video games?

Doll would be lying, to claim a lack of interest in Eve. Surely this angle of investigation wouldn't be amiss? The plastic kid kinda wanted something to take their mind off being stranded in another world right now, so they'd fish for leads there.
cmbr: (Default)

STILL CUTE

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-05-30 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, Doll's thoughts aren't too off the mark. Being the first of its kind, Eve is not suited for anything outdoors - its joints are more frail than that of a human's, so it is forced to stay inside the house for its own safety. Even a small fall could break something - while Crim could fix it easily, it still felt pain and it's an experience best not repeated.

Eve tilts its head after reading the device, answering with a nod. Though Crim speaks for it as usual, perhaps an indication of how familiar they are:

"Yeah, that's what we usually do. He likes to read, so I've been bringing back books. I'm sure he doesn't mind spending time with you."

Doll is impish but not too exuberant, so Eve can probably keep up. The homunculus tires easily, mostly due to its constitution.
hollowbutnotempty: Doll, smiling, with a little pink heart (lil heart)

[personal profile] hollowbutnotempty 2018-05-31 02:27 am (UTC)(link)
Not too exuberant? Wait until there's the right inclination and opportunity around, and Doll'll be proving just how not fragile they themselves are.

But until then, reading would do. Arts and crafts were always welcome pastimes!

I was translating a book

so what about mystery stories?

Where was it Crim had set the things Doll had tumbled in with, again? The kid glanced around for it even while holding up their device to make the offer.

[personal profile] oneirism 2018-05-31 10:47 am (UTC)(link)
[Lapis follows right behind the other witch, curious eyes glancing around the house as they walk - organised chaos is something she's familiar with, considering the state her own dwellings are usually in. But everything has its place and she knows where each thing is, so it still works.

And neither can Lapis judge Crim's sleeping habits, considering her own bed is both far too big for one person and covered with one too many pillows. But right now Lapis's main concern is who is in the bed, golden eyes examining the spirit curiously - she's really never seen any like it.

Her mind drifts back to her own companion, wondering if they're maybe similar somehow... But she can think on that later, once she's helped this spirit - pulling the blanket back and humming as she looks over the wounds.]

Mmm, I'm glad you were there to help. I'm not sure it would have made it otherwise... [The witch is quiet for a moment, before she reaches into her bag to pull out bottles to examine - bottles clear and filled with flora, and bottles with liquids that glimmer with the slightest movement or so dark that no light can touch it.]

I imagine there was no time to check, but did you see anything else there?
cmbr: (down)

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-05-31 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
[ crim sighs, tugs a few strands of hair away from her face, and starts hovering a foot away - close enough to see, but far enough to not get in lapis' way. ]

I found it in what's probably a pool of its own blood. [ it's every bit as gruesome as it sounds - the blood stained her robes, which is why she's in hunting clothes today instead of her usual casual coats. ] I suspect someone attacked it and left it for dead.

[ whoever that is, if they're still lingering in the area, that could be dangerous for everyone living inside. ]

What sort of spirit is it, anyway? I've never seen anything like it before.

[ most spirits tend to have very obvious indicators of what they presided over. this one looks almost like a teenager...... ]

Doll and Eve are opposites in quite a lot of ways, and not just in personality. It's cute, almost - and it also meant that Crim trusts Doll to treat Eve gently. The homunculus is fragile not just physically, but in its manner; while it is tenacious most of the time, it is somewhat afraid of strangers and had a tendency to cry.

"Oh, that sounds cool. What are you translating it to?"

There's also the issue of language comprehension across worlds, which leads her to wonder if people had secretly crossed over the realms without publicising it. Or maybe there was another reason they could understand each other.... all very interesting.

"I put your stuff on the counter." Still in the bag that they came with, arranged neatly, so Doll will have no issues finding everything inside. "You two can use the living room, if you'd like?"

Japanese to English

Doll held the reply up for her quickly enough -- and it at least did make sense, that as Doll was writing in English for them, they must know English. So the plastic kid wasn't too concerned about it, really. Not enough to pause to consider whether the languages would have the same name, and therefore the answer hold any meaning. They nodded back and smiled a little more, gesturing to Eve to come, and then headed to grab the bag in question.

It was only after exiting the room and walking down the hall to look for the living room that Doll paused to reconsider the language issue. If this was a different world entirely, with different geography, then that meant, logically, that there was no England... and therefore the language wouldn't necessarily be called "English", even if it was functionally the same language. Or was that some sort of dimension-hopping magic at work? Maybe passing from one to the other automatically switched around Doll's knowledge of languages? Did it do that to their translation dictionary too? To what they'd written so far? Or did they just gain another language and not realize it?

Oh. Oh, wow, this definitely needed to be looked into.

Doll's eyes had widened a little as they played those possibilities over in their mind, and they looked back to Eve, raising the bag a little. Books, yeah? They needed to check out the books, asap. Time to go spread them out in the living room and see what they could see!
cmbr: (photon)

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-06-01 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Japanese, huh?

That gets a slight pause from Crim, though that language is known by a different name here so she doesn't make the connection immediately. Maybe, Eve would recognize the script later, and bring it up proper.

"If you need anything, I'll just be here." Crim nods, letting Eve follow in Doll's wake to see what they should do next.
oneirism: (You are only getting stranger)

[personal profile] oneirism 2018-06-01 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
[That gets Lapis's brows to furrow, lips tugging into a frown for but a moment. With how wounded this spirit is, it must've been a brutal attack... It's sickening to think about. It's even worse to think that the one responsible is still out there.]

It does seem like it. I'll go investigate the area once the spirit is stabilised.

[Maybe there's some kind of hint, any physical or magical traces of the one who had done this. Lapis hopes so, the repulsion and outrage that someone would attack a spirit like this burning brightly inside her.

But first, she must make sure that it's stable. Humming in response to Crim's words, before shaking her head - eventually seeming to settle on a bottle full of a clear liquid.]

I'm not sure, I haven't seen anything like this either. It seems young, though... [Which makes it a bit harder to chose the right potions... Most she has work on varieties of spirits, but she's uncertain about the effects on this one.

She eventually settles on a bottle of clear liquid with a slight sheen - this is one of her more 'neutral' potions, so it can be used on most spirits. Hopefully it will help this one... Pulling the cork, before reaching for a glass dropper kept in another compartment of her bag - a soft, earthy scent now filling the room.

Once some of the potion is onto the dropper, she reaches to lift it above one of the wounds - if all works well, the potion should facilitate the healing and have the wounds close.]
cmbr: (gluon)

[personal profile] cmbr 2018-06-01 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's separated from its parent, then we should help find its way home.

[ she watches lapis work with the manner of a worried owl - the other witch had a knack for making natural remedies, so this should be fine. most things that hurt spirits were usually designed to do so, and while this spirit had some kind of a strange constitution, it didn't strike her as particularly malicious.

so she watches as lapis drips the concoction over recently washed wounds, and heaves a slow sigh of relief as the cuts on its thin body begin to close. one thing stands out to her, though - how its blood isn't the usual multicolour that spirits have, but a strange, dark green.

it doesn't wake up just yet, so she helps lapis apply the medicine to most of its injuries. maybe it just needs a bit more rest, so she motions for the other witch to step back so she can start on returning those bandages back to order - and then its eyes flutter open, staring up at the ceiling and then the two witches.

it has rather interesting eyes - green, with a ring pattern. crim freezes, tries to arrange her expression into something suitably harmless: ]

Uh... hi! How do you feel?
oneirism: (You are beyond compare)

[personal profile] oneirism 2018-06-01 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Hopefully it's parents are already looking for it.

[She hopes - that would make it easier to help it find its way home, and for it to get home safely. For now, she needs to make sure this spirit is healed - releasing a breath she didn't know she had been holding as the cuts begin to heal.

Yet, the green of its blood is another curiosity, golden eyes peering at it for a moment. It's a colour she's never seen, even among the colourful shades a spirits' blood can have - and it's something she examines still as each wound is closed up. Once she's done, she doesn't hesitate to step back at the other witch's motion - placing her equipment back into her bag with a soft sigh.

Now she watches and waits, eyes widening just slightly as the spirit finally awakens - Lapis's own expression something still and calmly, regarding the spirit with a slight tilt of her head once it sits. Everything about this spirit is unlike anything she's seen before...]

We've tended to most of your wounds, but let us know if you're still in pain.
cmbr: (tau)

[ the spirit eyes both of them with a glassy gaze, looking through the two women at first. perhaps it tries to speak, but all that comes out is a dry cough.

crim takes a step forward, but stops herself from going too close: just in case the motion startles the spirit. but it doesn't seem to react to that intrusion, blinking again at the ladies for a few more moments before shaking its head.

when it does speak, its voice is very soft, so that they have to go closer to hear. ]

.... am I dead?
hollowbutnotempty: Doll, shiftily looking off to the side, with a similar emoticon up in the corner (¬w¬)

[personal profile] hollowbutnotempty 2018-06-02 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Doll gave her a nod and a quick thumbs-up before heading out of sight, ending up with Eve and the things they fell into the garden with in the living room in short enough order. They spent a minute pointing out to Eve that the manga was read right to left, and then pointing to the various speech bubbles, and the corresponding pencil-written text in the notebook: it was an ongoing effort to translate it without making a mark in the book itself.

It was slightly inconvenient to have to go back and forth between the book and the binder's lined pages, but on the upside, the story wasn't exactly the most dialog-heavy, in the prologue. There was a scene involving a small village while it was dark out, some sort of magic, and a figure that was probably not a human, but was hidden in shadows, and then someone getting hurt. The first real chapter opened up with a few police officers getting out of a car in this little setting, in broad daylight this time, so likely the next day, and meeting with someone to check over the crime scene.

And of course, they end up calling in their consultant, the main character pictured on the front of the book, and the story really got started.

It had highly detailed artwork in a realistic style, if black and white, and it seemed to be written for possibly teenagers, if not adults, rather than much younger children -- but Doll didn't seem all that much like a teenager, and their handwriting, though carefully precise, rather agreed with that idea. Still, it was an interesting mystery story involving the supernatural, ghosts or youkai and the like, and Doll had gotten most of the way through it already; they opened the binder to take out the last page or so that they'd copied lines onto, to work on that with their translation dictionary, though it would be fairly obvious to Eve, if he wanted to watch, that Doll already had a somewhat decent handle on the language already, only really referring to the thicker book for some of the more complicated-looking characters, breaking the kanji into the simpler kana.

And Eve might well find Doll's choice of bookmarks interesting -- the kid had tucked a bit of colorful origami into their spot. It barely peeked out from the top of the pages, but it was shiny, a color-shifting metallic thing... which turned out to be a unicorn, if it were investigated.

[The dry cough prompts her brows to furrow, concern shining through for just a moment. Quietly wondering if she has anything for it to drink, though she's staying back as well - just in case.

The shake of its head is a quiet relief though, glad that it doesn't seem to be in any lingering pain - another soft sigh escaping from her. Though she does have to lean a bit closer to hear it speak - blinking in surprise for a moment at its words. Though maybe it's not too surprising, considering how badly it was attacked...]

No, you aren't. Crim found you - [Her head nods towards the other witch.] - and we managed to treat you. You're alive and safe.

[ The spirit sighs and sinks back onto the pillows, closing its eyes. ]

Thanks.

[ Though from how flat its tone is, it's hard to tell if it's happy about this. Crim purses her lips, before posing a question: ]

We can get you home if you'd like. After you've recovered, of course.

[ It remains silent for a few moments, still speaking in that hollow sort of voice: ]

Don't have one.....

Eve pretty much follows all of Doll's instruction, reading silently as Doll pointed out each page and its corresponding dialogue. While it doesn't speak, it appears to comprehend these words at least; nodding along as they followed the plot into adventure.

All things considered, it is quite an impressive undertaking. Once they reach one of the last few pages, it gives Doll a thumbs-up - both for effort, and also the acknowledgment of time shared together.

The origami unicorn catches its attention next, so it would point to the piece of folded paper once it seems polite to. How exactly was it made? Who made it? All very curious questionns.
