Title: lol there is no title I never finished it
Series: Pokemon Conquest
Characters: Motonari and Terumoto, along with their two Pokemon partners.
Word Count: Around 1.2k

It started just like any other day. The sun dawned sleepily over Greenleaf, bathing the nation's foliage in honey-gold warmth. Unlike other nations to the north, winter didn't really make enough of an impression here - in autumn, only a third of the trees bothered to invest in tinting their leaves in various shades of sunset.

Nevertheless, the visual effect was pleasing. Seen from high in the sky, the trees forming the landscape came together to assemble a large-scale version of their individual leaf mosaics. Patches of sunlight pooled on the ground where there was an opening in the canopy; they were especially prominent within the city centre, where vegetation was restricted neatly to the pavement.

Like all nations of Ransei, Greenleaf began its life as a small town. As the population expanded (and the town with it), roads leading out from the central keep became radial spokes which the new houses neatly aligned themselves with. The keep, too, grew with the town - and now resembled a fortress with temple-styled roofing. It was big enough to house the entire nation in times of crisis - but currently its outer doors were kept open, allowing the large open spaces within to serve as the city square. However, the inner keep was closed to the public. It was fortified enough to qualify as a castle, even without the protection of the outer keep walls. The Warlord and his family dwelled within. One would presume it to be a large and lavish residence - it was anything but. Only simple decorations adorned the walls here and there, and many rooms were unused save for the living quarters and extensive library.

By then, the city had already woken up. People from all walks of life bustled about its streets: shopkeepers laying out their wares, children chatting on their way to school, and craftsmen preparing to begin the day's work. However, the most important individual of the nation had not yet been roused from sleep.

The thick screen doors managed to block out most of the morning sun, but it was unfortunately not impervious to small children. Soft footfalls gradually sneaked into the warm silence, culminating in a series of cautious scratching upon the door's exterior. There was a few more additional moments of stillness before the screen slid open slightly with a luckily unnoticed creak.

A small boy of around five years of age eased himself through the resultant gap, breathing a sigh of relief once he had confirmed that the stealth operation was a success. Making his way cautiously towards the sleeping figure within, he carefully placed the Petilil that he had been holding beside the pillow. Satisfied, he quickly retreated to the far corner and waited.

The Petilil nodded an affirmative once her partner was in place. Gently shaking open her leaves, she began to dance. A rich floral scent soon suffused the air - and importantly, so did the accompanying pollen.

Their combined effect soon made itself known. The slumbering individual started stirring in his sleep, turning away from the Petilil in a bid to shield himself. However, it was to no avail - she quickly followed suit, ending her dance with a spray of petals. One had the fortune - or misfortune - to land on his nose.

"Tchoo!"

The child quickly ducked behind the shelf that had been serving as his hiding spot.

Motonari sat up drowsily, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. It took a few moments for him to notice the perpetrator of his sneeze.

"... Tsubaki?" He gently picked up the Petilil. "What are you doing here?"

She answered him with a look that was about as sheepish as a plant bulb could get.

Jiggling her rounded feet, she squirmed in Motonari's hands until he relented and put her down. The Petilil quickly dashed to safety behind the shelf - revealing the hiding place of her accomplice.

"Ahhh! Tsubaki, you're not supposed to come back, he'll see - oh." The boy looked up awkwardly. "S-sorry, grandfather..."

Motonari took a moment to process the situation. He couldn't exactly blame the boy for a bit of what he probably thought of as harmless fun. Plus, the gesture seemed oddly heartwarming.

The daimyo sighed before replying. "It's alright, Terumoto. I appreciate it." He gave his grandson a warm smile.

"Really? Yay!" Terumoto's downcast frown quickly faded, to be replaced by a sheepish grin. His Petilil partner scurried around his feet, waiting to be picked up - which he did a moment later. Tsubaki seemed happy, too - she began to jiggle a little, waving her leaves about. Heehee, we didn't get scolded after all!

Motonari chuckled. "Run along, now. Your parents might be looking for you. Both of you." He added, giving Tsubaki a meaningful glance.

"Yes, grandfather!" The child bowed in unison with his partner before exiting Motonari's room, closing the door behind them. However, snippets of their conversation still floated in.

"The uncles were right! Grandfather is always so kind - he didn't get mad at us or anything."

Yeah! We should do this more often. Especially if he oversleeps again, heehee...

"That sounds great. Soon, soon!"

Their voices vanished down the hallway.

Motonari stretched a little, cracking his shoulder joints and releasing the morning stiffness inside them. Much of the morning had already passed, judging from the sunlight streaming into his room. Oh well - much of the household ought to have started their activities by now, but the halls were strangely quiet. Hm.

Unfortunately, he barely had enough time to clear the mattress from the floor before the door slid open again.

A Serperior's head poked in, sniffing the air momentarily before the rest of his body followed into the room. He was quite large for his species, and bore white whiskers upon his snout.

Overslept again, eh? The Pokemon sounded amused.

"Well, I'm not as tired anymore, if it's any consolation." Motonari sighed in reply, running his fingers through his hair in a bid to neaten it. "Why didn't you wake me up, anyway?" The daimyo indicated a pile of folded blankets in the corner. "You even made your bed."

I had my reasons.

Huh. "What's with the cryptic words today, Hayashi?"

You'll find out soon enough. The Serperior chuckled. Either way, you should get ready. He turned and began inspecting the petals still scattered on the floor. Seems like Tsubaki was here.

Motonari responded with a vague sound before starting to tidy up his sleeping space. The sheets and mattress were stashed away in a chest placed in one corner of the room, and he threw in the Serperior's blankets as well.

Thanks.

"Well, at the very least you could tell me why."

Hayashi said nothing, instead replying with a mysterious smile. The Serperior met his partner's befuddled gaze with another chuckle before slithering out of the room, taking the opportunity to unhook Motonari's hat from the stand beside the door. He snagged the headgear's strap onto the end of his tail, eliciting an exclamation from its owner.

Ahahah, you'll have to come out to get it from me. The whole household is waiting~
